Linguistic Papers

The science of signs or (semiotics/semiology) is a newly emerging science that began with the studies of (Saussure) and (Pearce) at the beginning of the twentieth century. After that, it developed significantly to become a comprehensive science under which several directions fall, each of which is concerned with the study of signs from a specific perspective. As for its first roots, it extends back to the centuries before Christ, represented by what the Greeks, Indians, and Chinese researched. However, what attracts attention is the lack of reference by Western researchers to the efforts of the Arab researchers in this field, and this is part of the many issues that this research tries to answer concerning the concept of the sign and its divisions and the most prominent issues that the Arabs have studied concerning it. This research aims to contribute to presenting a clear vision, which helps us to locate what the Arabs studied from the cycles of development of this science and to indicate the extent of its importance and its relationship to the previous signs, studies, concepts, and what came after it, and the most prominent aspects of similarities and differences among them.
