A Disability Theory Application in \'Buried Child\' and \'The Curious

Abstract

Disability study is an interdisciplinary field that examines disability as a social, cultural, and political phenomenon within the literary text and is also concerned with the representation, portrayal, and experiences of individuals with disabilities. This research examines the representation of mental and cognitive disability in two plays, \"Buried Child\" by Sam Shepard and \"The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time\" by Simon Stephens. It hypothesises that these two plays show disability theory\'s applications in their texts. It follows the disability theory as guidance for analysing them to clarify the understanding of how mental and cognitive disabilities are portrayed and their importance in these dramas. It is limited to Sam Shepherd\'s and Simon Stephen\'s plays. It begins with an introduction and a discussion and concludes with a summary of the findings that support the previously stated hypothesis.

دراسة الإعاقة هي مجال متعدد التخصصات يدرس الإعاقة كظاهرة اجتماعية وثقافية وسياسية ضمن النص الأدبي، كما يهتم أيضًا بتمثيل وتصوير وتجارب الأفراد ذوي الإعاقة. يتناول هذا البحث تمثيل الإعاقة العقلية والمعرفية في مسرحيتين هما \"الطفل المدفون\" للكاتب سام شيبرد، و\"الحادثة الغريبة للكلب في الليل\" للكاتب سايمون ستيفنز. ويفترض هذا البحث أن هاتين المسرحيتين تظهران تطبيقات نظرية الإعاقة في نصوصهما. ويتبع نظرية الإعاقة كمرشد لتحليلها لتوضيح فهم كيفية تصوير الإعاقات العقلية والمعرفية وأهميتها في هذه الأعمال الدرامية. يقتصر هذا البحث على مسرحيات سام شيبرد وسيمون ستيفن. ويبدأ بمقدمة ومناقشة ويختتم بملخص للنتائج التي تدعم الفرضية المذكورة سابقا.

Abstract

Shakespeare's classic tragedy "Romeo and Juliet," which captures the spirit of modernism, is adapted and set in a modernist play in the modern Iraqi city of Baghdad. In order to represent the socio-political realities and cultural subtleties of Baghdad in the modern era, this paper explores how the play's themes and narrative structure are reconstructed and re-imagined. It explores the inspiration for "Romeo and Juliet in Baghdad," looking at the playwright and cast's goals and aesthetic decisions. In order to portray a feeling of the contradictory realities and complicated identities every day in Baghdad, the paper examines how the adaptation employs modernist characteristics like fragmentation, self-reflexivity.

Abstract

This study presents a feminist reading of Olive Dargan’s play "Semiramis" through the lens of mythology. It also sheds the light on theory of Sojourner Truth and Abolitionist movement and how women's rights were focused on by this movement and its pioneers. The relation between this theory and the play of Semiramis is presented and how the writer concentrates on the role of women and how they can take various responsibilities like men , the idea which is represented in the play. It examines the portrayal of the female protagonist, Samiramis, in the context of ancient myths and legends, and explores how Dargan’s interpretation challenges traditional gender roles and power dynamics. Drawing on feminist literary theory and mythological studies, the paper analyzes Semiramis’ agency, relationships, and societal influence within the play, highlighting themes of female empowerment, autonomy, and resistance to patriarchal norms. By deconstructing the mythological elements in Dargan’s work, this paper aims to shed light on the intersection of feminism and mythology in literature, and contribute to a deeper understanding of the representation of women in the context of ancient narratives. It tries to answer the question whether the author is feminist or anti-feminist?

Abstract

Animation films are considered one of the most important means of entertainment and education for children in the current era, and they have been used in many fields due to their positive or negative impact on children's morals and ideas. Among these areas is the promotion of homosexuality and acceptance of the mistakes of others, regardless of the extent of their harm to society and nature, through the films used by the Walt Disney Company in some of its famous animation films, which it promotes under the shadow of a lofty idea and finds supporters for it, which is the idea of creating an inclusive and equal environment for all. The Walt Disney Company shows that it seeks to direct children towards good values and morals and provide an inclusive environment for all, through its animated films that promote homosexuality in reality. It uses soft power to influence children's thoughts and entrench homosexuality and link it to the values of equality, tolerance and respect for others, regardless of gender or sexual identity. This paper presents a study on the use of soft power to influence the ideas and values of children and discusses a group of animation works of Walt Disney Company.

تعتبر الأفلام الأنيميشن من أهم وسائل الترفيه والتعليم للأطفال في العصر الحالي، وقد تم استخدامها في العديد من المجالات لتأثيرها الإيجابي او السلبي على أخلاقيات الأطفال وأفكارهم. ومن بين هذه المجالات الترويج للمثلية الجنسية و قبول اخطاء الاخرين مهما كان حجم اذاهم للمجتمع وللطبيعة من خلال الافلام التي تستخدمها شركة والت ديزني في بعض أفلامها الأنيميشن الشهيرة والتي تروجها تحت ظل فكرة سامية وتجد لها مناصرين وهي فكرة إيجاد بيئة شاملة ومتساوية للجميع. وتظهر شركة والت ديزني انها تسعى إلى توجيه الأطفال نحو القيم والأخلاق الحميدة وتوفير بيئة شاملة للجميع، وذلك من خلال أفلام الأنيميشن التي تنتجها والتي تروج للمثلية الجنسية في حقيقة الامر. فهي تستخدم القوة الناعمة لتأثير على أفكار الأطفال وترسيخ المثلية الجنسية وربطها بقيم المساواة والتسامح والاحترام للآخرين، بغض النظر عن الجنس أو الهوية الجنسية. تقدم هذه الورقة البحثية دراسة حول استخدام القوة الناعمة للتأثير على افكار وقيم الاطفال وتناقش مجموعة من اعمال الانيميشن لشركة والت ديزني.

Abstract

This research delves into the transformative power of myth, particularly its ability to redefine and restudy narratives across different eras. Drawing on Roland Barthes' linguistic deconstruction of myth and its conceptual basis as a primitive human construction, the study aims to represent the mythological style of a consumer narrative, spanning from ancient times to modern interpretations. Utilising Kant's aesthetic analysis, the research emphasises the reconstruction of the myth of Pygmalion in the works of George Bernard Shaw (1912) and Tawfiq Al-Hakim (1942). The aesthetic analysis is approached from two aspects: the 'social' dimension, exploring decadence to transcendence in Shaw's Pygmalion, and the 'ideational' dimension, examining transcendence to decadence in Al-Hakim's Pygmalion. These aspects encapsulate the struggle between 'art' and 'life,' presenting a nuanced exploration of "free art" and Kant's analysis of 'the beautiful'. This study examines the themes of transcendence and decadence in Pygmalion, emphasising the structure of 'diversity within unity' in both plays.

يتعمق هذا البحث في القوة التحويلية للأسطورة، ولا سيما قدرتها على إعادة تعريف وإعادة دراسة السرديات عبر العصور المختلفة. بالاعتماد على التفكيك اللغوي لرونال بارت للأسطورة وأساسها المفاهيمي كبناء إنساني بدائي، تهدف الدراسة إلى تمثيل النمط الأسطوري لسرد المستهلك، الممتد من العصور القديمة إلى التفسيرات الحديثة. ومن خلال استخدام التحليل الجمالي عند كانت. يؤكد البحث على إعادة بناء أسطورة بجماليون في أعمال جورج برنارد شو (1912) وتوفيق الحكيم (1942). يتم تناول التحليل الجمالي من جانبين: البعد الاجتماعي، وهو استكشاف الانحطاط إلى التعالي في بجماليون لجورج برنارد شو، والبعد الفكري، وهو دراسة الارتفاع إلى الانحطاط في بجماليون الحكيم. تلخص هذه الجوانب الصراع بين "الفن" و"الحياة"، وتقدم استكشافًا دقيقًا لمفهوم "الفن الحر" وتحليل "الجميل" من قبل كانت. تقدم هذه الدراسة فحصًا لموضوعات التعالي والانحطاط في الفن في بجماليون، وتؤكد على بنية فكرة "التنوع داخل الوحدة" في كلتا المسرحيتين

Abstract

The paper concerns studying the archetypes in The Lord of the Flies, the most prominent novel by William Golding. It deals with the conflict between civilisation and savagery through the young boys who find themselves on an isolated island and must adapt to their situation. In all stories, an archetype is a typical pattern, statement, or behaviour. The paper aims to illustrate that violent instinct comes from different external factors and focuses on human intention and instinct. This archetypal study shows how the inherent dark side of human nature can emerge when the constraints of society are removed by clarifying symbols and themes such as civilisation, savagery, and the loss of innocence. The paper focuses on only three characters, Ralph, Jack, and Piggy, and how each one reacts to the other. Each of these characters is analysed according to Carl Jung\\'s archetypal theory.

While Orwell's "1984" is a seminal work in science fiction, depicting a bleak future dominated by dehumanization and totalitarian control, Churchill's Far Away explores dystopia through the lens of drama, presenting a violent, politically charged society marked by anarchy and despair. Drawing on Orwell's goal to reshape societal perceptions in "1984," this research examines how both works address the impact of dystopian elements on individuals, with Churchill utilizing over-representation techniques to underscore the bleak outlook on the future. Abstract

Postmodernism is a late-twentieth-century ideology marked by widespread skepticism, relativism, and a widespread distrust of logic. This ideology dominated the minds and behaviours of most people at that time, starting with writers who began to adopt it in their own writings. One of the finest examples is August Wilson’s most popular play Fences , it portrays who people’s thoughts and conducts at that crucial period. The paper aims at showing how the characters reject everything imposed on them, and their way of creating their own subjective reality. This study examines how fences act as agents of grand narrative resistance in different literary works. It does this by taking a diverse approach. Using Jean-Francois Lyotard\'s idea of grand tales and how they affect cultural models, this study looks at how natural and symbolic walls can be powerful symbols of resistance against dominant ideas, structures, and systems. By comparing several relevant literary works, including August Wilson\'s famous play \"Fences\" and others, this study looks at how fences can be used for negotiation, identity assertion, and opposition, challenging established norms and hegemonic narratives. This study shows how fences are used in literature to reject, subvert, or rewrite dominant grand tales. It helps us understand how literary symbols can significantly impact social critique and change. This study adds to a larger conversation about where literature, cultural criticism, and symbolic resistance meet.

This study explores Martin McDonagh's "The Pillowman" through the lens of postmodern Gothic, unravelling the intricate interplay between postmodern elements and the Gothic genre in the play. The hypothesis posits that McDonagh employs postmodernist techniques to deconstruct traditional Gothic elements, offering a fresh perspective on the genre. The research employs a qualitative approach, conducting a detailed textual analysis of "The Pillowman." Abstract

It is said that taking a humanitarian stance when you are needed is better than offering condolences when it is too late. This article presents a symbol of the pain that women suffer under the influence of patriarchy. It examines the sensitivity to subtle human suffering, the silent desperation, and the shame of individuals who were unable to communicate their loss because they lacked self-worth and confidence. The code occurs as a series of literary elements that are frequently interpreted as contradictory indications. As a short story writer, both Anton Chekhov in Sorrow (Too Late) and Ansam Almaaroof in The Earthquake represent the challenge of gender roles in the lances of intertextuality. Al-Maaroof's short story, Zilzal, utilizes intertextuality and textual interpenetration to create a unified text. This intertextual relationship involves the entry of previous texts into a relationship with another, resulting in a new text that combines features and aesthetics. Second, the feminist perspective contends that sex and gender are social constructs that are open to question, which challenges their binary nature. Abstract

Caryl Churchill (1938 - ) is a renowned British playwright whose plays are known for their postmodern style and content. Her most famous play, A Number (2002), is regarded by many critics as a splendid play for its bold content that discusses the danger of technology in the postmodern era. Arguably, Churchill challenges the belief that technology offers assistance and prosperity to life, contending that technology can be a source of destruction and misery if it is not censored. The play, in particular, sheds light on the idea of human cloning and how it can affect human life. The study is divided into two sections and a conclusion : the first one is an introduction, which includes a short biography of Churchill’s career and life and an overview of the idea of human cloning; while the second section contains an analysis of the play based on the theoretical framework of dystopian literature. At last but not least, the conclusion sums up the findings of the study.

كاريل تشرشل (1938 -) كاتبة مسرحية بريطانية مشهورة، اشتهرت مسرحياتها بأسلوبها ومحتواها ما بعد الحداثي. أشهر مسرحياتها "رقم" (2002) يعتبرها العديد مسرحية ناقدة رائعة لمحتواها الجريء الذي يناقش خطر التكنولوجيا في عصر ما بعد الحداثة. يمكن القول إن تشرشل تتحدى الاعتقاد بأن التكنولوجيا تقدم المساعدة والرخاء للحياة، معتبرة أن التكنولوجيا يمكن أن تكون مصدراً للدمار والبؤس إذا لم تخضع للرقابة. وتسلط المسرحية بشكل خاص الضوء على فكرة الاستنساخ البشري وكيف يمكن أن تؤثر على حياة الإنسان. وتنقسم الدراسة إلى قسمين وخاتمة: الأول عبارة عن مقدمة تتضمن سيرة ذاتية مختصرة عن مسيرة تشرشل وحياتها ولمحة عامة عن فكرة الاستنساخ البشري؛ بينما يحتوي القسم الثاني على تحليل للمسرحية انطلاقا من الإطار النظري للأدب الديستوبيا. وأخيراً وليس آخراً الخاتمة تلخص نتائج الدراسة.
