Abstract
The Kurds in Iraq have played a significant political role since 2003, actively contributing to the establishment of the post-2003 political system and securing a recognized position within a federal framework. They participated effectively in federal governance and were able to consolidate a range of political and institutional gains.
However, this influence has gradually declined over time. This decline can be attributed to a combination of internal and external factors. Internally, political fragmentation and competition among Kurdish parties over power and influence within the Kurdistan Region weakened their collective bargaining capacity and reduced their ability to act as a unified political force. Externally, ongoing disputes with the federal government over key issues—particularly natural resources, territorial boundaries, and administrative authority—further constrained their political leverage.
As a result, the Kurdish political position in Iraq has shifted from a decisive and influential role in the immediate post-2003 period to a more constrained and fragmented one, limiting their capacity to shape national political outcomes.
