Abstract
The language of the Glorious Qur'an needs wide knowledge and a great linguistic competence in order to understand the different aspects of such a language, such as syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic. The current study aims at shedding light on the pragmatic meaning of ellipsis. The elliptical structures need inferences which are based on linguistic knowledge of the addressee to understand the intended meaning of Glorious Ayas. It is not easy to determine the elliptical structures with their intended meaning unless there is wide knowledge and a rhetorical background. To carry out this study, many examples from the Glorious Quran are analyzed in order to show the pragmatic meaning of the elliptical structures and the inferences of the addressee. It is found that the grammatical structure and the context have a great influence on the explanation of the intended meaning. The purposes of ellipsis are different from one Ayah to another. Additionally, the purposes are expressed in Arabic are different from those in English. The research deals with different types of ellipsis, such as the ellipsis of the subject, verb, object, letters, etc. An authorized translation of the Glorious Quran is adopted in this study. The main conclusions of this study show that the context and linguistic knowledge are important in determining the pragmatic meaning of ellipsis. The pragmatic meaning is different from one Ayah to another.
