Assessment of the Thermal Performance of Cables at Zummar Station, Considering the Impact of Harmonics

Abstract

This study evaluates the thermal impact of harmonic distortion on underground power cables through a real-life case study conducted at the Zummar 33/11 kV substation. Field measurements indicated that the cable most exposed to thermal stress was the one supplying an industrial area, where a Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) level of 23.8% was recorded due to nonlinear loads. Numerical simulations were carried out using the Finite Element Method (FEM) to analyze the thermal performance of the cable system under different seasonal loading conditions. The results showed that harmonics not only increased the temperature of the affected cable but also indirectly raised the temperatures of adjacent cables, leading to partial thermal redistribution within the system. These findings highlight the importance of integrating harmonic analysis with thermal modeling to achieve accurate current rating assessments and ensure the safe and efficient design of underground power cables, particularly in substations supplying nonlinear industrial loads.

Impact of Fault Resistance on the Performance of ANN-Based Faults Classification in the Farm of PV Systems

Abstract

This research provides an analytical study of the effect of fault resistance on the accuracy of fault classification in solar farms, with the aim of evaluating the performance of classification algorithms in realistic environments where the characteristics of electrical signals resulting from faults change. A model of a 290kW photovoltaic farm, consisting of 100 strings each containing 7 solar panels, was adopted, and the simulation was carried out using MATLAB/Simulink software. The study included different scenarios for electrical faults, such as line-to-ground (LG) and line-to-line (LL) failures, with the failure impedance changing from 0 to 500 ohms by a step of 20 ohms. Basic electrical signals such as currents, voltages, power, temperature, and radiation, were recorded for each fault. The data was pre-processed, then a classification model was built using the KNIME platform with the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) algorithm, and the data was divided into training and testing groups. The evaluation was conducted using multiple performance indicators: accuracy, retrieval, predictive accuracy, F1-Score, Matthews Correlation Coefficient (MCC), Area Under the Curve (AUC), and Logarithmic Loss (Log Loss), as well as confusion matrices analysis. The results showed that the high fault impedance leads to a gradual decrease in the performance of the model, as a result of the decrease in the clarity of the electrical signals associated with the fault.

Abstract

The natural polysaccharide Arabic gum is a multifunctional, sustainable material used widely in wastewater treatment technology. Its active functional groups such as hydroxyl, carboxyl, and amino groups facilitate the efficient removal of heavy metals, dyes, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and persistent organic pollutants. The high surface area and active functional groups facilitate its modification to form various structures such as hydrogels, nanocomposites, or biochar integrated into hybrid adsorption–photocatalysis systems. This review highlights the most familiar forms of Arabic gum in wastewater treatment technology, such as hydrogels, hydrogels nanocomposite, stabilizing agents, coating agents, and bio-activated carbon derived from Arabic gum using different preparation methods. Furthermore, this review outlines the application of Arabic gum as a photocatalyst for the degradation of different pollutants.

Abstract

Progress in storage technologies is vital to the efficiency of electric vehicles in combating climate change. The automobile industry’s transition to electric mobility has significantly increased the demand for battery storage systems (BSS) in terms of performance, reliability, monitoring, and evaluation of key parameters. However, poor safety and monitoring strategies for battery storage systems in electric vehicle applications pose an increasing threat to the vehicles’ sustainability and mobility. This calls for intelligent battery storage monitoring systems to mitigate carbon footprint and preserve battery lifespan of electric vehicles. This paper focuses on battery storage sustainability in electric vehicles with special emphasis on battery health surveillance systems, integrated with the internet of batteries. By leveraging advanced sensor technology, proactive control, data analytics platform, cloud computing, and advanced algorithm, the proposed model can significantly improve battery conditions, charging and discharging process, thermal management, cell balancing, safety and reliability.

Abstract

Antioxidants and Metabolic Biomarkers: Clinical Insights in Breast Cancer Patients

Abstract

Breast cancer is the primary cause of cancer-related deaths among women and the most common life-threatening malignancy identified in this population. The second most common cause of cancer-related fatalities in women is breast cancer. According to the most recent Iraq Cancer Requisition, breast cancer is the most common kind of cancer in women in Iraq, making up almost one-third of all female malignancies. Total of 100 patients with breast cancer was used in this study and compared to 100 healthy groups. Serum levels of vitamin C, vitamin E, Triglycerides, HDL, prolactin, cysteine protease, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase were measured by standard methods. The study reported that HDL, Triglycerides, glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase, cysteine protease and prolactin were significantly increased in patient with breast cancer, while vitamin E was not significantly increased in the same patients. In addition, vitamin C levels were significantly decreased (p<0.0001) in patients group when compared with healthy controls

Abstract

Corrosion remains a critical global challenge, imposing substantial economic, safety, and environmental burdens across infrastructure, transportation, marine, and energy sectors. Traditional corrosion inhibitors, while effective, suffer from rapid depletion, uncontrolled release, environmental risks, and limited long-term stability. Encapsulation of corrosion inhibitors has emerged as a transformative strategy, enabling controlled and stimuli-responsive release, improved stability, and self-healing capabilities. This mini review provides a comprehensive overview of encapsulation technologies, including polymeric microcapsules, inorganic carriers, hybrid systems, and advanced nanoengineering approaches. Preparation methods, ranging from physical and chemical routes to emerging microfluidic and electrospinning techniques, are critically examined. Furthermore, the article highlights state-of-the-art characterization techniques SEM, TEM, FTIR, XPS, Raman, TGA, DSC, UV-Vis, and EIS essential for evaluating morphology, composition, stability, and release behavior. Key applications in protective coatings, marine and offshore structures, smart self-healing systems, and eco-friendly green chemistry approaches are discussed. Finally, challenges regarding scalability, cost, compatibility, and long-term stability are addressed, alongside future perspectives emphasizing multifunctional nanocontainers, bio-based inhibitors, and AI-driven design.
