In light of the pressures that the economies of a number of developing countries were exposed to during the eighties resulting from the debt crisis, which was followed by a significant decline in external transfers, and in order to reduce imbalances at the macroeconomic level, these developing countries were forced to adopt liberal economic policies within the structural adjustment programs imposed by the International Monetary Fund on developing countries.
