Imam Muhammad al-Jawad, son of Imam Ali al-Ridha (peace be upon them both), is the ninth in the chain of the twelve infallible imams, whom the Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family) appointed as successors after him. He was born, peace be upon him, in the month of Ramadan of the year one hundred and ninety-five, in Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah.
The era of Imam Muhammad al-Jawad covers a quarter of a century of the history of the Abbasid state (195-220 AH), in which he lived during the late caliphate of al-Amin (198 AH), the caliphate of al-Ma’mun (d. 218 AH), and the beginning of the caliphate of al-Mu’tasim (d. 227 AH). The features of this period are almost distinct from those that preceded it due to the unprecedented events it witnessed in the history of the Abbasid state since its establishment in the year (126 AH). The most important of these events revolved around three themes:
• The Abbasid conflict: represented by the bloody conflict over power between Al-Amin and Al-Ma’mun over power, which ended with the killing of the Caliph Al-Amin and the pledge of allegiance to Al-Ma’mun as caliph in the year (198 AH) at his residence in Merw.
• The Alawite-Abbasid conflict: The Alawites took advantage of the preoccupation of the Abbasid authority with its internal conflict, so they became active by carrying out a number of revolutions in a number of cities of the Abbasid state that caused concern for the succession, which forced al-Ma’mun to improve the relationship with the Shiites by swearing allegiance to Imam Ali al-Ridha (peace be upon him) as heir to the throne, in which al-Ma’mun approved The right of the family of Muhammad (may God bless him and his family) to the caliphate.
• The early Imamate of Imam Muhammad al-Jawad (peace be upon him): In terms of the history of Shiism, the Imamate of al-Jawad was unprecedented in the history of Imami Shiism, as none of the imams of his age, eight years or seven years and four months, had previously challenged the Imamate. It was an experience that people were not familiar with, even the Shiites. They were not accustomed to leading the boy, so it sparked a wide controversy that amounted to skepticism among some of them.
And at a time when the early Imamate of Al-Jawad (peace be upon him) was a source of confusion for the Shiites in all Islamic cities to the extent that their confusion rose to the level of doubt about it, and caused confusion among some of them; For it was an affirmation that the position of the Imamate was made by God Almighty, like the position of prophethood, a divine position. It is God Almighty who chooses the imams and appoints them as the prophets.

الإمام محمد الجواد بن الامام علي الرضا هو التاسع في سلسلة الأئمة الاثني عشر المعصومين، الذين نص عليهم رسول الله خلفاء من بعده. ولد في شهر رمضان من سنة خمس وتسعين ومائة في المدينة المنورة، كان هو الامام بعد ابيه الرضا علي بن موسى بالنص عليه والإشارة إليه وتكامل الفضل فيه.
يغطي عصر الإمام محمد الجواد ربع قرن من تأريخ الدولة العباسية (195 - 220هـ)، عاصر فيها أواخر خلافة الأمين(198هـ)، وخلافة المأمون (ت218هـ)، وصدر خلافة المعتصم (ت227هـ). وتكاد تكون ملامح هذه الفترة متميزة عمّا سبقها لما شهدته من أحداث غير مسبوقة في تاريخ الدولة العباسية منذ تأسيسها عام (126هـ). وقد تمحورت أهم هذه الأحداث حول ثلاثة محاور هي:
• الصراع العباسي العباسي: المتمثل بالنزاع الدموي على السلطة بين الأمين والمأمون على السلطة، والذي انتهى بمقتل الخليفة الأمين ومبايعة المأمون بالخلافة عام(198هـ) في مقر اقامته في مرو.
• الصراع العلوي العباسي: وقد استثمر العلويون انشغال السلطة العباسية بنزاعها الداخلي فنشطوا بالقيام بعدد من الثورات في عدد من أمصار الدولة العباسية سببت قلقاً للخلافة الأمر الذي اضطر المأمون إلى تحسين العلاقة مع الشيعة بمبايعة الإمام علي الرضا ولياً للعهد التي أقرَّ فيها المأمون بأحقية آل محمد بالخلافة.
• الإمامة المبكرة للإمام محمد الجواد : وعلى صعيد تاريخ التشيع فقد كانت إمامة الجواد غير مسبوقة في تأريخ التشيع الإمامي إذ لم يسبق أن تصدى للإمامة أحد من الأئمة في مثل سنِّه وهو ثمان سنوات أو سبع سنوات وأربعة أشهر. فكانت تجربة لم يألفها الناس حتّى الشيعة؛ فانهم لم يألفوا إمامة الصبي لذلك أثارت جدلاً واسعاً بلغ حد التشكيك عند بعضهم.
وفي الوقت الذي كانت فيه إمامة الجواد المبكرة مصدر حيرة للشيعة في سائر الأمصار الإسلامية إلى الحد الذي ارتقت فيه حيرتهم إلى مصاف الشك فيها، وأثارت الإرباك عند بعضهم؛ فإنها كانت تأكيداً على أنَّ منصب الإمامة جعل من الله تعالى كمنصب النبوة، منصب إلهي؛ فالله تعالى هو الذي يختار الأئمة ويعينهم كما الأنبياء.
