Iraqi cities represent some of the most significant urban centers that have played pivotal roles in the course of human history, owing to a profound civilizational heritage that helped shape the features of ancient and medieval civilizations. Al-Hilla stands at the forefront of these cities, possessing a long history that extends deep into antiquity.
Travelogues serve as a vital source for studying the history of Iraq, as they contain firsthand accounts and factual events recorded through direct observation, hearing, and witness. This provides these records with high documentary and historical value.
This study examines the social and economic aspects of the city of al-Hilla, based on the records of Iranian travelers during the period from 1796 to 1925. During this era, al-Hilla was a major hub on the transportation routes connecting northern and southern Iraq, particularly via the Euphrates River. This strategic location granted the city immense economic and commercial importance. Furthermore, the city was distinguished by its architectural and cultural heritage, reflecting the social, cultural, and economic life prevalent at the time, much like other major Iraqi cities.

Sayyid Muhammad ibn Al-Qasim ibn Mu’ayyah Al-Hilli is considered one of the preeminent scholars who attained a rank of superior knowledge (A’lamiyya) among his contemporaries, both within the city of Al-Hilla specifically and among scholars of the Twelver Imami school in general. His profound scholarship was shaped by a variety of intellectual springs and sources, as he studied under several prominent scholars, particularly those from Hilla from whom he drew his knowledge and under whom he studied through either formal authorization (Ijazah) or narration (Riwayah).
The importance of this research lies in identifying the prominent scholars of Hilla whose scientific activity was relentless and characterized by continuous, high-quality output. This factor contributed significantly to the scholarly excellence of the intellectual production of those who led and pioneered the Twelver Imami school.
The research is divided into an introduction and two main sections. The first section, titled “His Hilli Sheikhs by Authorization,” provides biographies of the scholars from Hilla under whom he studied and who granted him scholarly licenses. We have focused on his relationship with his mentors, utilizing texts from authoritative sources that indicate the strength of the bond between the student and his teachers. The second section, titled “His Hilli Sheikhs by Narration (For Whom No Formal Authorization Text Was Found),” outlines his other teachers from al-Hilla. Here, we emphasize his relationship with them by citing evidence from reliable sources that confirm his apprenticeship under them. The study concludes with a summary of findings and a list of primary and secondary sources.

Undoubtedly, the Islamic ethical heritage is a rich and prolific tradition, built upon steadfast Islamic principles that have propelled it forward. This heritage has bestowed upon us various ethical schools and orientations. Naturally, the diversity of perspectives in Islamic ethics has led to the emergence of multiple ethical systems. Accordingly, this research attempts to identify the primary objectives of these schools, while examining their research methodologies and scholarly contributions, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses, and focusing on their lasting impacts and views.
This study explores the most prominent features of the ethical discourse among the scholars of Al-Hilla, comparing them with the characteristics of philosophical and gnostic (Irfani) ethical schools. These features represent the most significant dimensions of the ethical discourse within the Al-Hilla school. The first section of this chapter is dedicated to the methodology of authorship, including classifications, details, and the ultimate purpose of the discourse.
The second section focuses on the defining landmarks of the Al-Hilla scholars’ ethical discourse in comparison to other schools. It examines their approach to subject matter, their mobilization of Quranic and Hadith texts to support ethical arguments, and their use of an accessible style that avoids complex philosophical and logical complexities.

This research examines the analytical and independent opinions (Al-Ara’ Al-Ijtihadiyya) of Taqi Al-Din Al-Nili as presented in his two commentaries, Al-Tuhfa al-Shafiya and Al-Safwa Al-Safiyya, through a comparative study. By its nature, this study aims to identify al-Nili’s specific grammatical insights and compare them with the views of both classical and contemporary grammarians.
The findings reveal that Al-Nili possessed original grammatical views that distinguished him from other scholars. Far from being a mere follower of his predecessors, he demonstrated a sharp and discerning scholarly personality, supporting, opposing, and debating grammatical issues with objectivity. This intellectual independence becomes evident through the presentation of selected issues from Al-Tuhfa Al-Shafiya and Al-Safwa Al-Safiyya.

Among the sciences that flourished in the city of Hilla was the science of Arabic Grammar (Nahw). Eminent scholars emerged in this field, conducting extensive and multifaceted studies. Due to the complexity and vastness of its rules, various attempts at linguistic simplification (Taysir) appeared, aiming to make grammar more accessible for learners and to enable them to master it with ease.
This research examines a significant effort in grammatical simplification within al-Hilla, specifically the book “A View on Desinential Inflection” (Ra’y fi Al-I’rab) by Sheikh Yusuf Karkush. As one of the prominent scholars of al-Hilla, Karkush proposed simplifying views that aligned with those of Professor Ibrahim Mustafa in his renowned book “Reviving Grammar” (Ihya’ Al-Nahw). Key among these issues is the matter of substitute inflectional markers (Al-’Alamat Al-Far’iyya), which apply to: the Six Nouns, duals, sound masculine plurals, sound feminine plurals, and nouns prohibited from declension (diptotes).

Augmented infinitives (Al-Masadir Al-Mazida) are numerous and diverse; some are augmented by one letter, while others by two or three. Both classical and contemporary linguists consider all augmented triliteral infinitives to be rule-based (Qiyasiyya). These follow a specific set of rules and morphological principles when transforming verbs into their respective infinitive forms.

Rhetorical contrast (Antithesis) is considered one of the most prominent artistic mechanisms contributing to the construction of significance within poetic texts. It creates linguistic tension and semantic opposition that enriches the poetic experience and heightens emotional resonance. The significance of studying contrast lies in the fact that it is not merely an opposition between two terms, but rather an interactive semantic system that produces a “third meaning,” transcending lexical boundaries to reach the level of artistic vision.
This study seeks to analyze the celebrated poem (The Great Ode) beginning with the verse: “The face of morning to me is a dark night...” by the poet Al-Sayyid Ja’far al-Hilli (d.1315 AH).
It aims to uncover the forms of verbal, conceptual, and contextual contrast, while illustrating the irony resulting from this opposition within the text, employing a rhetorical-analytical methodology.
The research problem is centered on the following question: How did Al-Sayyid Ja’far al-Hilli, as a poet, employ rhetorical contrast to create semantic paradoxes that contribute to shaping his poetic vision?.

The outbreak of World War I in 1914 was a landmark historical event that reshaped the map of the regions serving as theaters for military operations. Furthermore, it significantly influenced the distribution of spheres of influence among colonial powers seeking to control resource-rich areas. This situation catalyzed resistance movements among the inhabitants of these regions, including Mesopotamia (Iraq), where the people confronted the British occupation under the leadership of the religious authority (Al-Marja’iyya). This resistance was particularly potent in cities housing religious schools, most notably the city of Al-Hilla, with its scholarly and national elite known for their rich literary, cultural, and religious heritage. They rejected the British occupation and played a vital role in the famous 1920 Revolution (Thawrat al-Ishrin), involving Al-Hilla’s senior scholars and notables. These figures expressed their profound resentment and hatred for the foreign occupier through the religious and literary assemblies that were flourishing at the time.
This research examines the national stances of Al-Hilla’s scholars using a historical narrative and an analytical description of their positions, while highlighting key historical events. The first section focuses on the British occupation of Iraq in 1914, while the second provides a clear depiction of the stance taken by Al-Hilla’s scholars regarding the British occupation.

The subject of this research focuses on the foundations of the controversial grammatical issues presented by Taqi Al-Din Al-Nili (Ibrahim bin Al-Hussein bin Ubaidullah Al-Hilli), a prominent scholar of the 7th Century AH. In his work, Al-Tuhfa Al-Shafiya fi Sharh Al-Kafiya, numerous controversial issues between the Basra and Kufa schools are discussed. Al-Nili provides detailed evidence for these issues, accompanied by acceptance, rejection, approval, or preference (Tarjih). He meticulously ensures that no issue is left without a commentary, justification, or clarification, drawing upon Quranic verses, poetic texts, and the opinions of the two major grammatical schools as his primary sources, while also incorporating the views of various other scholars across different intellectual doctrines.
Due to the abundance of these issues, this research focuses on a selection of cases specifically within the “Category of Nouns” (Al-Asma’). These selected cases reveal the impact of this Hilli scholar on grammatical inquiry and his distinguished academic standing. The issues are organized according to their sequence in the book Al-Tuhfa al-Shafiya.

There is no doubt that ancient manuscripts and classical books represent grand heritage foundations, rich in content and eloquent in clarifying diverse fields of knowledge. They serve as cognitive bedrocks and detailed gateways to the broader human intellectual system.
Accordingly, eminent scholars and distinguished investigators have dedicated themselves to writing analytical introductions and editing these works. Among them is the great investigator, Al-Sayyid Muhammad Mahdi Al-Kharsan (may his shade endure), who has authored precious introductions and fruitful, verified studies for a vast collection of heritage books. To capture this immense contribution, we have selected the insights produced by his honorable pen and enlightened thought in his introduction to Tafsir Muntakhab al-Tibyan, which is published within the Encyclopedia of Ibn Idris Al-Hilli.
In light of our examination of this engaging introduction, the study is structured into a preface, an introduction, and five primary sections. The preface defines the research title’s components, exploring the definitions of “Methodology” and “Introduction,” providing a brief biography of Al-Sayyid Al-Kharsan, and introducing Ibn Idris Al-Hilli’s codex (Tafsir Muntakhab Al-Tibyan). As for the five sections: the first addresses the verification of the book’s title; the second focuses on the verification of the author’s name and lineage; the third pertains to textual appraisal and correction; the fourth examines the works of Ibn Idris, his mentors, and his students; and the fifth deals with scientific and methodological criticism. The research concludes with a set of findings presented in the conclusion.
