Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the impact of hadith and poetic reports whose
transmission is not authentic on the adoption of exegetical orientations based on linguistic meanings that would not have been relied upon were it not for those reports. The
danger of such practices becomes evident in that the meanings they generate soon find
their way into language dictionaries, where they come to compete with the original lexical meanings of dictionary entries.
Among the examples of the practices mentioned is the stance of many Qurʾān exegetes and others regarding a verse in Sūrat al-Ḥajj that contains the word (tamannā) (“he
wished / hoped”), attributed to the Messenger — peace and blessings be upon him. In
interpreting this word, they relied on two inauthentic reports, one hadith-based and the
other poetic, which led them to a meaning far removed from the word’s original lexical
sense and from the textual Qurʾānic context in which it appears.
In order to clarify all of this, contribute to unpacking the dialectic of mutual borrowing between lexicographers and others, and reveal the significant role of the text and its
context in understanding word meanings, we have chosen to write this study.
