يُعد العنف من الظواهر التي تُرافق المرأة في جميع مراحل حياتها مُنذُ الولادة حتى البلوغ وبصور وأشكال متعددة كالضرب، والزواج القسري، وحِرمانها من حقوق عدة كحقها في التعليم، والاستقلال الاقتصادي فضلاً عما تتعرض لهُ من اعتداءات جنسية. وتتعدد الجهات التي تُمارِس العنف ضد المرأة فقد يُمارس عليها من قبل عائلتها، أومن قِبل المجتمع سواءً في الشارع أو في أماكن العمل، أو يكون من قبل الدولة عن طريق أجهزتها أو قوانينها التمييزية السلبية، كما قد تتعرض لهُ من قبل أطراف النزاع في حالات النزاعات المسلحة والذي يكون أشد وأكثر وطأةً عليها نظراً لما قد تواجهه من عمليات اغتصاب واستغلال جنسي وغيرها من اشكال العُنف الاخرى.
