This study aims at investigating Iraqi EFL University students' comprehension in novella. The sample of this study consists of the fourth year students/ Department of English/ College of Education at University of Samarra. The total number of those students is forty.
To achieve the aim of this study the following procedures are adopted:
1. A diagnostic test has been constructed.
2. The test is exposed to a number of specialized jurors who agree on its content validity and face validity.
3. A pilot study is administrated by giving a test to twenty EFL students chosen randomly from the selected sample to determine a number of factors including reliability of the test item, the difficulty level of the items and their discrimination power.
Reliability is ensured by using Cronbach's Alpha formula and interscore reliability method. The coefficient reliability is found to be 0.81 and 0.94.
Results obtained by statistical treatment of data have shown that fourth year EFL students in the college of Education at University of Samarra are below the average level in their efficiency in comprehending irony.
The study ends up with recommendations which are based on the obtained results.

This study explores the impact of the use of social networking sites, especially Facebook as the most common means of social communication in Iraq, on the type of language used in everyday talk and the spread of innovative words among Iraqi youth. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to describe the nature of these words, the type of language used and the reasons behind its familiarity. The technological revolution has led to radical changes and major societal transformations that included the lives of individuals and business organizations, as well as governments. By the beginning of the 21st century, this revolution produced the so-called "social networking sites", such as, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Engram, Telegram and many others.
The descriptive approach was used to achieve the objectives of this qualitative investigation since it is one of the most used methods in the field of social and human sciences. The data was collected from 200 young people using social networking sites and live in the city of Nasiriya, south of Iraq. Using questionnaires, as well as, other research tools, to collect data since all were specifically designed for the purposes of this study and based on the nature of the research questions.
The research findings suggest that most of the Iraqi's young people use these words in social networking sites and their daily lives. There is a strong a relationship between this new kind of language use in the community and the political, economic, religious and social atmosphere in the country. Therefore, the results imply that the language used in social networking sites is a reflection of the individual's educational background and cultural environment. This research study is important because it sheds the light on the possibility of harnessing the sites and Facebook "in particular" to create a generation conscious of the requirements of life and the development of ideas among young people .

The main concern of this study is to show whether there is a possibility that the interpreters of the Glorious Qur'an can convey the same effect of the relative clauses as it is manipulated in the source language. The current study aims at pointing out the grammatical functions of relative clauses which occur in the Glorious Qur'an with some clarification in an attempt to give a better understanding of them in both languages. The study hypothesizes that renderings which use relative clauses will convey meaning more clearly than those which do not. Thus, this study assures that renderings which use relative clauses (henceforth Rcs) are more successful in conveying the meaning clearly than those which do not. Arabic relative clauses are noticed in a different way which affects the functions of these clauses in the target language. The three renderings which have been selected in this study are incapable conveying exactly the cases of gender and number as they are found in the source language.

Including see, smell, hear, etc., verbs of sensation are those verbs that refer to human's senses. Each verb has a physical meaning and also can often be expressed metaphorically. The nexus between the physical and metaphorical use of verbs of sensation is problematic. The present study attempts to shed much light on difficulties faced by Iraqi EFL learners in using verbs of sensation, their awareness to recognize verbs of sensation syntactically and semantically, do they have the same awareness to recognize verbs of sensation and the differences in the students' performance at the production and recognition levels.

Motivation is one of the important aspects of second language acquisition. Motivation is a kind of desire for learning. It is very difficult to teach a second language in a learning environment if the learner does not have a desire to learn a language, taken into consideration from that aspect, to be able to make the learner active and desirable in learning process which gains importance.
Many students have found difficulties in learning English. There are multiples reasons that hinder their learning process. Students may not be aware of the significance of English itself; others may learn English just to achieve good grades in the exams. However, most of those learners are actually not motivated. Without motivation, they are less interested in learning English as subject though this category of students knows how English is important in modern world. Therefore, motivation has an effect on learning English.
Most of the learners can barely communicate. They can hardly express themselves with their own words. Hence, speaking is one of the most important elements as oral communication in language. English as second language is very difficult for learners to produce inside and outside the schoolroom. Despite of the fact that learning grammar and language structure is significant, they are not sufficient to acquire the second/foreign language since many students have several problems in using it with the others. Communication in the classrooms means having the students practicing their language in pair or group in order to improve their speaking ability.

The recent dramatic change of events in the world , particularly 11th Sept. , Nice Attack and the appearance of ISIS, have made Islam, Muslims, and matters pertaining to them "news today" , i. e.,one of the most important and attractive topics. Events and actions happening in the name of Islam or by those who misinterpret Islam have given media giant stories for portraying Islam and Muslims negatively . So , media have started to use different linguistic means to attain their political , ideological , or economic goals .The current study is a critical discourse analysis aiming at investigating the Islamophobic discourse that media are inclined to use in representing Islam and Muslims ; thus, it also aims at investigating the representation of anti-Islam ideologies on Western news websites .
To achieve these aims , the study hypothesizes that (1) a biased negative technique of selection of materials is used in representing Islam and Muslims on news websites and (2) the linguistic tools mostly used and the ideas given focus to on British and American news websites are almost simmilar reflecting similsr idiologies in dealing with Islam and Muslims.
To carry out the study , six articles from two websites are selected . The articles are analyzed linguistically and ideologically according to Fairclough's three dimensional approach (2010) which ,in turn, employs the notion of thematization in addition to Halliday's systemic functional tools.
The main conclusions of the current study are as follows : (i) all the hypotheses set for the study have been verified , (ii) Islamophobia on Western news websites is taking a grave direction which is looked at as a representation of Islam and Muslims, that is , mainly the generalization of every negative incident or feature about Islam as a faith and on the majority of pacifist Muslims (iii) anti-Islam bias ideologies are represented on Western news websites through five primary themes (the theme of violence ,the theme of Muslim women, the theme of Sharia Law , the theme of the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the theme of Muslim/Non-Muslim relationship ).

The current study involves a teaching strategy that enhances students’ motivation by promoting teamwork as well as the development of kinesthetic and visual learning styles. This strategy is applied on high school students at the age of seventeen. It is divided into two parts. The first part involves a presentation of what an adjective is and related matters such as positions, forms and types of adjectives in English. The second part is the actual application of the teaching strategy where students apply what they have learnt from the presentation and they start creating materials such as flash cards to contextualize their learning in a meaningful way through the strategy described in this paper.
A rubric is used to grade the performance of students during their oral production. This instrument is classified in four levels of performance, namely: needs improvement, satisfactory, good and excellent. The reason why a rubric is used is that the activity promotes the achievement of competencies that cannot be graded by numbers only as they involve attitude, abilities, knowledge and values. It is concluded that students have to use their background knowledge to come up with ideas of what the adjective category is, what the pronunciation of it is and an example where they can use it in a spontaneous way. Moreover, this activity can be adapted to teach a whole range of lexical phrases, collocations and patterns as well as language forms. Also, it is enjoyable and meaningful for students in the sense that students have the chance to move around the classroom, use their body parts, make noise, laugh and above all learn.

The Role of Didactic Strategies to Promote Competencies of EFL High School Students: The Adjective Swatter

The mobile phone has penetrated deeply into all fields of human life. It becomes our partner that cannot enjoy our time without it. It has become an essential tool of student’s life. The present study aims to reveal the effect of using the mobile as assisted language learning inside and outside the classroom, also to measure its effect on students’ language achievements. The participants of the study were from Department of Geography (2nd grade) – college of Arts- University of Anbar who study English language as ESP subject. To achieve this aim, the following questions were set:
1- Is there a statistically significant difference at (α = 0.05) in the mean scores between the experimental and control groups due to the teaching method?
2- Is there a statistically significant difference at (α = 0.05) in the mean scores between the male and the female students of the experimental group in the posttest?
To answer the questions and collect the data of the study, “Google Translation APP”, pre and posttests were used. The findings of the study reveal that there was a statistically significant differences at (α = 0.05) in the mean scores between the two groups and for the favor of the experimental group. Also, there was a statistically significant differences at (α = 0.05) in the mean scores between the male and female students for the favor of the male students.

This Paper conducts a linguistic analysis of the notes written by EFL Nassiriya students at college of Medicine . It aims at identifying the linguistic features of the English used in medical writing through answering the following question:
-What are the morpho-syntactic features of medical Notes ?
Note-taking is the process that English foreign learners perform when they attend lectures in English . It involves certain important skills , such as good command of listening , extracting the major points and the gist of utterances , using abbreviations , contractions , shorthand keywords, etc.
Lecture is the predominant and most common method of teaching in higher education throughout the world . Thus note taking imposes itself as a necessary method for utilizing the subject matter of the lecture .
The study is based on the following hypotheses (1)the notes written by EFL Nassiriyah students of the college of Medicine are characterized by certain morpho-syntactic features to the extent that make them as a special variety.(2) the passive verbs in either medical notes do not represent a linguistic feature compared with the active ones..
In order to achieve the aims of the study, two types of notes written by twenty five students are examined :Surgery and Ortho . These notes are taken from 5th year students . To the best knowledge of the researcher , no such study has been carried out in the field of the language of medical issues in Iraq , therefore the present study is an attempt to fill this gap
